Thursday, 20th of
September 2012 was my first meeting with a Native Speaker. He is from America
and his name is Jonathan Gasbar. He is about 25 years old and tall. I think he
is like Shaggy , a character in Scoby Doo cartoon. Anyone agree with me ? Guess
what ? We were so excited when the first meeting came. Besides that he is
handsome (the ladies said that ), it’s also a great opportunity to speak with a
Native Speaker in order to practice more. 100 % English ! . You can imagine
that, our class was like an international class. It’s rare we get in daily
activity in English Department. We usually speak Bahasa in our daily
conversation, even in several subjects .
I don’t know why people prefer to speak Bahasa in campus because we are English
Department. I will be happy when someday we prefer to speak English, at least
in the class. Of course , we have to start from ourselves and I will
try to speak English more in the class.
Well, in the first meeting, we
discussed about Describe an Object. Such as person , animal , and character. We
had a great time there. We enjoyed every moment we had. First , John showed us
a picture. A monkey picture. He asked us to write down every single word that
we can get from that picture. I got many
words. Then , he asked one of us to read those words. I was the one who raised
my hand. I read my words. John took one of my word then he gave us the synonym.
We got another vocabulary there. It’s a great way to improve our vocabularies. “If
we have a lot of vocabulary , we can speak easier” John said.
The second activity that we did in
Conversation class is Drawing an Object based on a description. It’s my
weakness. I hate drawing . I hate it because my drawing is always bad. I don’t have
a great imagination skill. Actually, I didn’t
enjoy this phase but I tried to participate well. John divided us in some groups. He asked us to
describe a person and write it down on a
piece of paper. After writing it down , we chose on of our group member and the chosen
person read his/her description. Others group member have to draw a person
based on the description, then the reader chose whose picture was closer to the
description. I was lose in all the
readers. The benefit that we can get from this phase is we understood that more
detail description will make other person can imagine who is the character that
we mean.
The last activity was a funny game.
John asked us to write down a name of famous person in the world in a piece of
paper. He told us to choose the person who is really famous. He messed up the
papers and asked all the students in the class to put the paper in our head
without looking the paper. We had to figure out the person in our head by
asking question to others student. It was so funny and I like it.
That was our activities in the
first meeting in Conversation class with Jonathan Gasbar. We had a great class there. I cannot wait for
longer time to meet with him again. Thanks John , thanks for the awesome class
that you gave to us. Hopefully , we can learn more about English from you.
